Camping is one of the best ways of enjoying outdoor activities. However, there is one little aspect that is not so fun about camping, getting rid of waste and garbage. As annoying as it can be, even in our lives in the city, it's something that has to be done. In the city, getting rid of your garbage is not complicated at all, but once you're out in nature you won't find it that easy.
The thing is that it's important to understand the impact human beings do on the environment, for example, it's easy to throw liquids in the water believing nothing bad will happen, which in reality, everything we do has an impact on nature. So, in order to avoid damaging our ecosystem, I'll show you today some important tips you can use when you want to dispose of your garbage.
The best way to minimize the garbage you produce while camping is to get rid of it beforehand. At home, take your time to dispose of anything that will be garbage later and is not necessary to bring to the trip. For example, snack wrappers, you can easily get rid of the wrappers and store the snacks in containers. Another example, cereals, instead of bringing with you the whole box, store the amount you want in a container. By doing this you're doing a lot already.
Never do this. While food waste is biodegradable, it takes a long time to disappear, and that's not the main reason why you shouldn't throw food waste in your camping spot. Animals will most likely eat it, and anything that is outside of their natural diets can be a danger to them. Plus, animals will start to associate humans with food, which can be dangerous for both species. Always store your food waste in plastic bags or containers.
Reusable containers are going to be your allies, use them wisely. Just like we talked about before, you can use them to store your food or even your food waste and garbage. Freezer bags are also a good option as they are less likely to break and spill your garbage. Whatever you find the most comfortable.
Bringing disposable dishes will save you a lot of work, but just like food waste, you have to store them in plastic bags or containers. Some dishes might have food waste in them, don't throw that away either, it doesn't matter how small it may be, always store any kind of waste in containers. Also, don't try to burn them either, these items will release toxins that are highly toxic to the environment.
As harmless as it sounds, brushing your teeth near water sources makes a negative impact on the environment, it affects wildlife specifically. Toothpaste has a lot of chemicals that aren't supposed to be consumed by animals, and, toothpaste attracts animals very quickly. Therefore, toothpaste waste should be kept away just like any other waste we've discussed so far.
