While going camping during fall is one of the best decisions you can make in your life, not everyone is prepared for the high winds that might come your way. Fall weather can be wild and unpredictable, it might give you a headache or two. But, don't let that take the best out of you, there are ways to prevent the crazy fall winds from ruining your trip. Today I'll give the best strategies and tips to deal with the weather and still get the most out of your camping experience.
Of course, not every single camping experience requires a tent. But in case you do need a tent, I recommend investing in a good one. Your tent is your home for the duration of the trip, it's the only thing that's keeping you away from animals and the weather. If your shelter doesn't have a strong foundation, there is a high possibility that it could collapse. You need a strong tent that is able to stay on the ground and that won't collapse easily with the strong winds.
Before you even set the tent, take a look at what's around you. See if there are any tree branches or any dead trees that could fall on your face in the case of strong winds. Keep an eye out for falling branches that might come your way. Also, look for any type of wildlife, see if there are spider webs, ants, or pretty much any type of bug near your camp. Avoid setting your tent near these places.
Even if you take all the safety measures, the wind can still make some damage to your tent. Come prepared with a first-aid kit for your tent, sew any holes and other damages. Bring a first-aid kit for you as well, sometimes the high winds can also cause injuries. Accidents like these can always happen, however, make sure you secure all your gear to the ground strong enough that it's difficult for the wind to rip out.
Learn to do some knots to tie things with ropes. Using external guylines is also a nice idea to secure everything. A good tip is to avoid using flapping fabric, or leaving flapping fabric open, they will most likely tear with the winds. Just like I said, even if you try to think ahead and do all these things, accidents can still happen, so, don't worry too much about it and enjoy your trip.
